Disposable ‘Manchester’ is a photography zine publication with a focus on Covid-19 and lockdown. This was a collaboration with Mandy Simpson, my mum, who is currently enrolled on the Falmouth MA Photography course.
The concept was to discover how teenagers in Manchester had dealt with lockdown and Covid and to see how it has impacted their lives.
We handed out disposable cameras to seven Manchester teenagers aged between 14 and 19 years old. They were each provided with the same twenty questions and asked to respond to them with photos. The questions allowed the teenagers free rein to take images of whatever they pleased. We also asked each participant to write down how Covid and lockdown had affected them personally.
After receiving the 273 photos, we needed to edit them down to a select few which was a huge task. We used just 20 images and created the first issue of Disposable as a zine. Using inspiration from Federico Estol’s publication ‘Héroes del Brillo’, we made a full bleed photography zine showcasing the photos and included the texts from the teenagers.
